[Entrevista] Jeph Howard, The Used:'Somos The Used y no nos andamos con gilipolleces '

Más de una década avalan la trayectoria de The Used. Lejos de la constancia, su carrera ha pasado por altos y bajos que han marcado a su legión de fans. Tras recolectar todo tipo de críticas, nada favorables, de su anterior trabajo, “Artwork”, ahora regresan con “Vulnerable”, un disco que regresa a las bases originales de la banda.

Jeph Howard, bajista del cuarteto, nos ha concedido la siguiente entrevista.

[Carol] - Antes de Nada, como está Bert después del accidente sufrido en el show de OC?

[Jeph] - Está bien. Nunca he conocido a un hombre que se haya roto más huesos y que siga dando saltos más fuerte que nunca.

[C] - En “Vulnerable” se advierten ritmos más trabajados y experimentales, pero con la misma melodía pegajosa vocal de Bert McCraken. A la hora de su composición, todos los miembros habéis tenido el mismo nivel de implicación?

[J] - Empezamos a escribir este disco todos juntos y acabamos sacando unas 60 ideas, pero cuando nos metimos en el estudio Bert y yo improvisamos algunas ideas más y reescribimos otras en un teclado mientras Feldman trasteaba con algunos samples de ordenador bastante simples para usar como ritmos de fondo. Después nos sentamos todos juntos y vimos detenidamente cada canción empezando por la batería.

[C] - Cuánto tiempo os ha llevado grabarlo?

[J] - Empezamos a componerlo unos 6 meses después de "Artwork". Grabamos en tres secciones separadas de unas tres semanas a un mes de largo cada una.

[C] - Regresáis a los brazos de John Feldmann. Cómo ha sido la experiencia respecto a los primeros 3 discos?

[J] - Mucho más relajada. Todos hemos crecido y cambiado de forma positiva, incluido John.

[C] - Las críticas recibidas con “Artwork”, no fueron muy amables. Imagino que habrán tenido que influenciar a la hora de realizar Vulnerable…

[J] -  Realmente no. No puedes estar escuchando críticas tanto negativas como positivas. Y de hecho a nuestros fans más verdaderos les encantó "Artwork". El problema con ese disco no fue la música, sino el que se filtrara tres meses antes y que por tanto no obtuviéramos nada de apoyo del que en ese momento era nuestro sello. En realidad ese fue el principio de "Vulnerable".

[C] - Muchos marcan vuestro anterior álbum como aquel con el que tocasteis fondo. Los más incisivos, incluso apuntaron que sería el final de The Used. Pero aquí estáis, más vivos que nunca con el quinto disco debajo del brazo. Cómo afrontáis estas críticas tan duras?

[J] - Tuvimos momentos duros durante el todo el lanzamiento de "Artwork". El hecho de que nuestro sello no nos apoyara unido a malas decisiones de management que se tradujeron en cancelaciones de giras completas, sí que hizo que tocáramos fondo. Pero desde la debilidad encontramos fuerza y empezamos a componer y crear de nuevo.

[C] - Hemos escuchado a Bert describir Vulnerable como un disco para los verdaderos fans de música Hardcore. Se trata de una reminiscencia de vuestro primer disco homónimo y, por tanto, una redención de los “daños” que “Artwork” pudo causar a vuestros fans más antiguos?

[J] -  De nuevo, a nuestros fans les encantó "Artwork" y tocamos canciones de él cada noche. Ven a un concierto y velo por ti misma.

[C] - Rotas las relaciones con Warner, habéis creado vuestro propio sello Anger Music Group, asociado a Hopeless Records. Con este proyecto, pretendéis abarcar todo el engranaje que genera la banda? Os habéis planteado la opción de sacar a otros grupos bajo vuestra tutela?

[J] - Somos The Used y no nos andamos con gilipolleces. Toda la gente de Hopeless se ha portado genial con nosotros y estamos muy agradecidos por ello. Trabajaremos con otras bandas pero por ahora todo está centrado en nosotros, The Used.

[C] - Han pasado 11 años desde el origen de The Used. Cúal es el momento más especial que habéis vivido, y, por el contrario, el que desearías haber metido la cabeza bajo de la tierra?

[J] - Diría que los pasados 11 años han sido el momento más especial y el peor fue el primer concierto que tocamos en Amsterdam, donde Quinn y yo empezamos el concierto en afinaciones distintas. Ouch!

[C] - Después de esta larga carrera, qué queda de aquellos chavales que se juntaron por la diversión de tocar y pasar un rato entre amigos?

[J] - Todavía nos juntamos para pasarlo bien y tocar como un grupo de amigos. Ven a un concierto y lo verás. Es todo amor.

[C] - Estaréis muy liados de gira por Estados Unidos. Para cuando toca España?

[J] -  Amo España y estamos planeando volver en Otoño.

More than a decade back out the course of The Used. Far from perseverance, their career went through ups and downs that marked their legion of fans. After receiving all kind of reviews, most of them not in their favor, of their previous cd "Artwork", now they come back with "Vulnerable", an album that return to the original roots of the band.

[Carol] - First of all, how’s Bert doing after the accident he suffered at the OC show?

[Jeph] - He is fine, I've never met a man break more bones and still jump back strong as ever.

[C] - On “Vulnerable” we can hear more elaborate and experimental rhythms, but always with the sticky known voice of Bert McCraken. When you were writing it, did all the members have the same level of participation?

Jeph- We started writing this record all together and ended up coming up with 60 ideas, but when we went into the studio Bert and I jammed out some ideas and rewriting ideas on a keyboard while Feldman messed with simple computer samples for back beats. Then we sat down all together and went through each song starting with the drums.

[C] - How long did it take to record it?

Jeph- we started writing this record about 6 months after artwork.we recorded in three separate three week to month long recording sections.

[C] - You returned to John Feldman’s arms. How was the experience compared to your first three albums?

Jeph- A lot more relaxed. We have all grown as changed in positive ways including John.

[C] - The reviews you got regarding “Artwork” were not really kind. I guess this influences you when it comes to writing “Vulnerable”?

Jeph- Not really, you can't listen to positive or negative reviews. And actually our true hardcore fans loved artwork. The problem with artwork wasn't the music it was it getting leaked three months early and not getting much support from our at the time from our label. That really was the beginning of how vulnerable started.

[C] - A lot of people associated your last album to you hitting rock bottom as a band. The most incisive ones even stated that it would be the end of The Used. But here you are, more alive than ever with your fifth album seeing the light. How do you manage to bear all these tough words and reviews??

Jeph- We did have a hard time with everything during the entire artwork release. No push from the lable mixed with poor management decisions leading to the cancelation of entire tours, that is when we hit the bottom. But from weakness we found strength and started writing as creating.

[C] - Bert described “Vulnerable” as an album for the real fans of Hardcore. Is this a reference to your debut self-titled album, and therefore a way to redeem yourselves for the damages “Artwork” could have done to your oldest fans?

Jeph- Again, our fans loved artwork and we play songs from it every night. Come to a show and see for yourself.

[C] - Since you parted ways with Warner, you decided to create your own label Anger Music Group, with the support of Hopeless Records. With this project, are you willing to cover all the needs The Used might generate? Have you thought about releasing other bands’ albums under your protection?

Jeph- We are the used and we don't fuck around. Everyone at hopeless has been great and we are very thankful for them. We will work with other bands but as for now it's all focused on us, the used.

[C] - 11 years passed by since you formed The Used. Which would you say was the most special moment you lived as a band? and on the other side, which was the one which you wish you could have go your head under the ground?

Jeph- I would say the past 11 years is the most special moment and Worst moment was the first show we played in Amsterdam, me and quinn started the show in two different tunings, ouch!

[C] - After all these years, what’s left of those kids who got together just to have fun playing music and hanging out among friends?

Jeph- we are still here getting together having fun and playing music as friends. Come to a show and see for yourself. It's all about the love.


[C] - I guess you’re pretty busy right now with the American tour. When do you think you’ll make it back to Spain?

Jeph- I love spain and are planing to return in the fall.
