[Entrevista] Kris Orlowski: 'Seattle es un sitio donde el talento es rampante'

En la primera década del siglo XXI hemos sido testigos del 'resurgimiento' del folk de una manera bastante notable. Artistas populares, contemporáneos, o tirando al bluegrass, innovando sobre un término que usamos con demasiada facilidad sin conocer bien los orígenes de lo que fue la música Folk y sus grandes etapas de florecimiento.

Aun así, podríamos tener delante otra etapa más moderna y contemporánea del género.

Gracias a esto, hemos descubierto grandes artistas, muchos de ellos provenientes de América.

Independientemente de los artistas conocidos mundialmente a raíz de esta tercera explosión folk, hay miles de artistas con un valor absolutamente asombroso que normalmente viven en la sombra, con la compañía de sus guitarras, e intentando hacerse un hueco, sin demasiada prisa, en el mundo musical.

Lo consigan o no,  viven por y para la música…  y eso es algo por lo que siempre hemos apostado, gente que siga haciendo música en estos momentos de cambio en los que nos encontramos… sin importar el público al que llegue.

En nuestros momentos de exploradores “musicales” en los que buscar, conocer, indagar, explorar,  es otra de las tareas apasionantes, nos hemos topado con grandes artistas con un público reducido pero fiel. Voces angelicales o simplemente “paralizantes”, que pueden hacer que las agujas del reloj se paren mientras los observas cantar acompañados  únicamente de sus guitarras. Y es aquí, cuando nos planteamos que queremos compartir esto con vosotros.

En este capítulo, os traemos a Kris Orlowski y en el siguiente a Dawn Mitschele, que conocimos por separado, pero que el destino juntó,  y como si una señal se tratara, nuestra vocación por saber más de sus respectivas carreras nos hizo sentarnos con cada uno de ellos...

ENTREVISTA CON KRIS ORLOWSKI

Hola! Marina Sánchez desde WMusik, aquí. Qué tal va?

Estoy genial,  en medio de la planificación de una gran lanzamiento con una orquesta entera. Hay tantas cosas adelante que pasan “detrás de las escenas”, que tengo muchas ganas de tomarme un respiro y hablar de la parte que me apasiona, la música.

Últimamente has estado girando por el estado de Washington, cómo han sido todas estas fechas?

La gira ha ido realmente bien. Hemos hecho muchos shows divertidos tanto con la banda como con una versión acústica del grupo mucho más desnuda. Me encanta poder viajar a diferentes sitios y volverme un poco loco si estoy en el mismo sitio demasiado tiempo.

Qué material estás tocando ahora mismo? Sabemos que has estrenado algunas nuevas canciones recientemente...

Sí, estamos tocando algunas canciones aparte de la nueva grabación cuando tocamos en vivo “All My People Go” y “Mountains” el nuevo single de nuestro EP. Una de mis partes favoritas de la experiencia en directo es cuando empezamos a tocar por primera vez las nuevas canciones. Hay mucha pasión y las canciones están siempre evolucionando, así que cuando tocamos una canción en directo por primera vez, suena muy distinta a cuando tocamos la canción un año más tarde, intentamos que las cosas se mantengan frescas. Será divertido tocar algunas de esas mismas canciones con una orquesta de acompañamiento para nuestro concierto de lanzamiento.

El relación a tu música cómo describirías la escena musical en Seattle y todo el estado ahora mismo? Cómo es el público y su respuesta hacia tu trabajo?

Seattle es un sitio donde el talento es rampante, músicos y artistas están por todas partes y hay muchas gente de aquí con mentes brillantes, lo que  en el subconsciente crea mucha inspiración y acaba en muchas oportunidades para colaborar.

Me he dado cuenta últimamente que se está volviendo complicado para las bandas conseguir que la gente vaya a sus conciertos, pero hay una infraestructura en Seattle para que los músicos puedan conseguir un seguimiento local e incluso ir más allá de Seattle. La escena está siempre cambiando, pero la buena música para que resuena en Seattle sin importar el género.

Para aquellos que solo te conocen por tus vídeos de internet, te pueden ver tanto tocando solo como acompañado por una banda. Cómo te sientes más cómodo? Cuál de las dos propuestas sientes más como algo tuyo?

Prefiero tocar con la banda. Me gusta la idea de hacer de una de mis ideas musicales algo más grande que solo mi voz y guitarra. La colaboración de grupo de verdad me ayuda  a que mis canciones florezcan y se conviertan en más interesantes. Es duro porque siento que ya no son mías nunca más, aunque enmarcamos las canciones y la banda como “Kris Orlowski”. Ha sido así durante un tiempo y ha funcionado, así que nos hemos quedado con ello y mantengo una comodidad, o cierta comodidad, como cantautor que lidera una banda.

Volviendo de nuevo a tus vídeos en internet, debo ser honesta, estoy totalmente enamorada de tu colaboración acústica con Dawn Mitschele. Cómo pasó todo? Por favor haz algo parecido pronto!

Te lo agradezco mucho. Dawn es una de personas más bonitas (tanto en su personalidad como en su buen rollo) que he conocido en mi vida. Puedes escuchar una profunda y preciosa honestidad en su voz. Hemos estado tocando algunos conciertos juntos el pasado año y hemos hablado de colaborar en una canción. Después de un show en el Doe Bay resort, nos sentíamos inspirados por el sitio y decidimos cantar una versión juntos y como nuestro amigo Tos tenía su cámara...El resto es historia.

Hay alguna otra cantante femenina con las que te gustaría colaborar?

He querido hacer algo como esto siempre y la verdad es que tengo una amiga cantante que lidera una emergente banda  local con la que espero colaborar pronto. Solo necesito dar brillo a la canción “J”.

Menciona tres grupos con los que te gustaría tocar.

Me gustaría pensar en ello con gente que está todavía viva y girando. Diría The Shins, Cinematic Orchestra, The National. Esto puede cambiar en un día dado. Ayer eran Bon Iver, Feist and Miike Snow.

Después de editar tu reciente Orchestral EP, cuáles son tus planes para el final del año y 2013? Alguna intención de acercarte a Europa pronto?

Estoy considerando pasar algún tiempo en Europa en enero. Aún parece un poco como un sueño imposible, pero me encantaría dirigirme a Polonia y hacer algunos shows, luego visitar España y el Reino Unido durante un pequeño periodo. Las cosas están todavía en el aire, pero tan pronto como el CD haya sido lanzado, tengo dos semanas para finalizar los planes, luego haré algunos shows en la costa oeste con la banda y dos grandes conciertos en NYC a principios de diciembre.

Hemos visto un interés creciente de amigos, fans y de la industria sobre este nuevo EP así que vamos a explorar las cosas este otoño con un número de shows en el país y luego estoy en busca de aventuras antes de meter mi nariz en nuevo material.

Cuando uno empieza a leer tus letras puede sacar una buena cita de cada dos versos, como si fuese un poema. Cómo es tu proceso de escritura de las letras? alguna vez te has sentido más como un poeta en vez de un liricista?

La poesía es enormemente influyente en mis letras. Son sinónimos en el tipo de escritura que hago. Estoy contando una historia, estoy pintando un cuadro, estoy emulando algo que significa mucho para mi. Cada canción tiene su propia voz, su propia historia y viaje. No creo que pueda ser nada más excepto poesía aunque yo sigo considerándome un escritor de canciones, no un poeta. Creo que los poetas son mágicos y a menudo mucho más proféticos de lo que yo lo soy.

Hi! Marina Sánchez from Wmusik.com here. How is it going?
 
It’s going great Marina, I’m in the midst of planning for a big release with a full orchestra. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes, that I’m excited to take a break and talk to you about the part I’m passionate about, the music.
 
Lately you’ve been touring around Washington state, how have all these dates gone so far?
 
Touring is going really well. We’ve been playing a lot of fun shows both with the band and with a more stripped down, acoustic version of the group. I love getting to travel to different places and get a little stir crazy if I’m in one spot too long.
 
Which material are you playing right now? We know you premiered some new songs just a week ago...
 
Yes, we are playing a few songs off the new record when we play out live “All My People Go” and “Mountains” the new single off our EP. One of my favorite parts of the live experience is when we first start playing new songs. There is so much passion and the songs are always evolving so when we play a song live the first time, it usually sound very different when we play that song a year later, we try to keep things somewhat fresh. It will be fun to play some of these same songs with a backing orchestra for our release show.
 
In terms of your music how would you describe the scene in Seattle -and the whole state- right now? how are the audiences and their response to your work?
 
Seattle a place where talent is rampant, musicians and artists are everywhere and there are a lot of brilliantly minded folks in one place, which often subconsciously creates a lot of inspiration and there ends up being a lot of opportunity for collaboration.
 
I’ve noticed lately that it’s getting harder for bands to get people out to shows, but there is an infrastructure in Seattle for musicians to build a local following and even go beyond Seattle. The scene is always changing, but good music seems to resonate in Seattle no matter the genre.
 
For those who just know you for your Internet videos, they can see you on your own or along with a band. How do you feel more comfortable? Which of both proposals do you feel more like something ‘yours’?
 
I prefer to play with the band. I like the idea of having one of my musical ideas becoming bigger than my voice and guitar. The group collaboration really helps the songs flourish and become more interesting. It’s hard because it doesn’t feel like it’s just mine anymore, yet we still frame the songs and band as “Kris Orlowski”. It’s been like that for a while and it’s worked, so we’ve stuck with it and I maintain enough comfort or semblance of comfort that we remain as a ‘singer-songwriter’ fronted band.
 
Referring again to your videos on the web, I have to be honest, I’m completely in love with your acoustic collaboration with Dawn Mitschele. How did all happen? Please do something like it soon!
 
Thank you so much. Dawn is one of the most beautiful people (both her personality and her overall vibe) that I’ve met in my life. You can hear the depth and cherished honesty in her voice. We had been playing a number of shows together this past year and had talked about collaborating on a song. After a show at the scenic Doe Bay resort, we were feeling inspired by the place and decided to sing a cover together as our friend Tos had his camera. The rest was history.
 
Are there any other female singers you would like to collaborate with?
 
I’ve been wanting to do something like it since and actually have a female friend who heads a burgeoning local band that I’m hoping to collaborate with soon. Just need to polish up the song J.
 
Name three groups you would love to play with.
 
I like to think of this as people that are still alive and touring. I would say The Shins, Cinematic Orchestra, The National. That can change on a given day. Yesterday it was Bon Iver, Feist and Miike Snow.
 
After releasing your last Orchestral EP, what are your plans for the end of the year and 2013? Any plans to make it to Europe soon?
 
I’m looking at spending some time in Europe in January. It still feels a little bit like a pipe dream, but I would really love to head over to Poland and play a few shows, then hit spain and the UK for a short spell. Things are still up in the air, but as soon as the CD is out, I have two weeks to finalize plans, then I’m doing west coast shows with the band in November and two big shows in NYC in early December. We’ve seen some increased interest from friends, fans and the industry around this new EP so we are going to explore things this fall with a number of shows around the country, then I’m looking for some adventure before putting my nose to the grindstone around new material.
 
When one starts reading your lyrics you can get a nice quote, every two sentences, just like a poem. How's the writing process? have you ever felt like a poetitst intead of a songwritter?
 
Poetry is hugely influential on my songwriting. There synonymous in the type of writing I’m doing. I’m telling a story, I’m painting a picture, I’m emoting about something that means so much to me. Each song has its own voice, its own story and journey. I’m not sure it could be anything else but poetry, though I still consider myself a songwriter, not a poet. I think Poets are so magical and often feel so much more prophetic than I do.
